A Party at Sea: Carnival Mardi Gras is Coming to Town!
A Party at Sea: Carnival Mardi Gras in Port Canaveral
It’s no secret that Carnival and Port Canaveral go hand-in-hand. They are one of the biggest cruise lines in the United States, and they are tied with Royal Caribbean for the number of ships home-porting in Port Canaveral (they each have FOUR!). However, if you’ve read our article on the big news about Terminal 3, then you know that Carnival Cruise Line is planning to station it’s largest ship EVER in the Port Canaveral revamped CT-3 in Fall 2020. Talk about awesome, right? The Carnival Mardi Gras is the latest and greatest in cruise news. So, this month we’re going to cover a little bit of what we already know about this XL-class ship from Carnival!
Preparing at Port Canaveral
When the news was announced that Port Canaveral was breaking ground at the old Cruise Terminal 3 in preparation for a totally new, awesomely big, and fantastically designed cruise terminal, we knew it was big. We just didn’t know how big until a little bit later, when Carnival announced that the plans were mainly to accommodate the future XL-class ships of Carnival. The Mardi Gras is the first of this line of enormous ships coming to our beautiful port, and Canaveral Port Authority is spending a whopping $150 million on renovations. That’s the most expensive construction project that the port has ever had. Shortly after the “launch pad”-themed terminal complex at CT-3 is completed in October 2020, the Carnival Mardi Gras will be completed and sailing to us from Finland. We can’t wait!
Are you as excited as we are? Get ahead of the game and start planning your Mardi Grad trip NOW! Carnival is already showcasing and booking Port Canaveral cruises to the Western Caribbean and Eastern Caribbean, as well as an especially long Southern Caribbean cruise!
Innovation at Sea: The Mardi Gras Cruise Ship
The Mardi Gras is named after the first Carnival ship ever launched. But the differences between now and 1972 are incredible! Not only is the Carnival ship living up to its class named (XL!), it’s also making strides with the environment. The Mardi Gras is going to be North America’s first cruise ship to run on liquefied natural gas (LNG). All 180,000 tons of fun will be powered with a clean burning fuel that Carnival claims will make it the greenest ship in our hemisphere! Carnival is paving the way for the environmentally-conscious to enjoy their Caribbean cruises guilt free.
Get in the Zone!
Besides being the biggest ship in the Carnival fleet, what else does the Mardi Gras offer its cruisers? The Mardi Gras is bringing six unique Zones to cruisers. What are Zones? These are six distinctive areas on the ship with their own exclusive experiences, dining, and entertainment. They are themed, they are fun-packed, and they are guaranteed to let you organize your day a little bit better. Alongside twenty different decks and twenty different styles of Carnival excel suites, this ship is designed to let you customize your experience!
From the sweet, relaxing vibes in the sun of Summer Landing, you’ll discover BBQ and a good place to sip a beer. Lounge away the day next to the pool in this cozy section. If you’re looking for a more chic experience, there’s a Mediterranean zone to explore. In the decadence of the Italian lifestyle of La Piazza, there’s plenty of flavor from the Cucina del Capitano, a 24/7 pizzeria, and cafe, all complemented with live musicians. Grand Central is also, well, grand. The three-deck area has a little bit of everything, highlighted by floor-to-ceiling windows featuring amazing ocean views. You’ll be able to watch family friendly shows, enjoy Asian cuisine, or sip drinks at the piano bar!
Not your style? Try the big and easy lifestyle in the French Quarter, where you can feel like you’re in the middle of New Orleans. The city’s spirit is alive in the form of a jazz club, southern comfort food, and classic cocktails! Having a ship called the Mardi Gras wouldn’t be the same without a French Quarter, right? Two other casual sections will be available for families to enjoy. The first is Lido. Lido offers the ultimate foodie experience with Guy’s Burger Joint, the BlueIguana Cantina, and the Seafood Shack. Hang out poolside while you get your grub on!
The Ultimate Playground, however, is the pinnacle of fun and entertainment. It’s no wonder that Carnival needs three whole decks to contain this complex of sports ares (featuring mini-golf, basketball, and ropes), a water park, and all-ages fun zones. And on top of all of that? The first roller coaster at sea is coming with Carnival Mardi Gras. The BOLT Ultimate Sea Coaster is innovative, exciting, and 800 feet of crazy fun. Plus, you get to control your speed, so it’s a great ride for anyone! So, whether you’re a daredevil or just looking for a quick way to catch a view of the ocean, this roller coaster can accommodate.
Small Changes Bring Big Results in the Staterooms
Carnival knows that you’re there for the entertainment. However, that doesn’t mean they’re skimping on the design for where you sleep! Carnival has been hyping their new room design for the past few months, and it’s not surprising. The new name of the game is “comfort and function” with the Mardi Gras.
The new stateroom designs from DCA Design International have plenty of inspiration from hotels so that it’s a more guest-friendly environment to relax in. Apparently, they’ve used more clever designs to bring space and utility to Carnival cruisers. Bedside lamps move, there are more outlets, foot stools are also storage and tables…. And that’s just the beginning.
There will be over 180 types of suites and 20 stateroom categories, including exclusive high-end suites, spa staterooms, family-centric rooms, and even the familiar Havana Club adults’ section. According to the information Carnival has released so far, Mardi Gras will have 70% balcony and ocean-view rooms. This is a relief to all of us who love to see the sunshine from our own private getaway! On top of that, there will also be hundreds of rooms that connect so that families can book and stay together.
